What’s the point of the Mets?

So, without further ado, here is the Top 10 of “What is the point of the Mets?”

(10) They are not the Yankees

New York is arguably the world’s capital city. It is vibrant, intense, and cosmopolitan. I’ve heard that if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. Sports teams get so much attention. Mediocre players are hailed as Gods, while below-average players are dismissed as has-beens. Everything is extreme.

The Yankees are easy to dislike. Part of it is jealousy; they are the most successful team in the sport and the biggest sporting franchise in the world. Some of us are even old enough to remember when they won a World Series.

Part of the dislike stems from their dominance when the Steinbrenner money was enough to bully everyone else. And part is sparked by the arrogance of the fans and the proliferation of NYY caps. Even my daughter has two… which I refuse to let her wear when out with me.

The Mets are different. They could be so easy to follow if they could only get their act together.
