After a gruelling and sometimes frustrating season, we have finally reached the playoffs of GBFBS. With the top four teams in each division progressing to a two-week semi-final, and then a two-week final, we have some mouthwatering ties ahead.
NL WEST
Congratulations to Matt Pumfrey for winning the regular season, and almost inevitably, congratulations to the Jonny Gould/James Holden Dream Team for proving that cream still rises to the top.
Joining Matt, Jonny and James in the divisional playoffs are Mark Johnson, and, courtesy of a final-week nail-biting 248-242 victory, Jonny Benton.
It will be a fabulous battle between these four teams for the NL West title.
NL NORTH
A seven-game winning streak to finish the regular season firmly puts a target on Paul Denyer’s back. He is joined by Matt Sutton, Paul Dearnley, and Andrew Sharp, with Mark Lowry just missing out on ‘points scored’ despite the same winning record as the two above him.
AL CENTRAL
It was a Dodgers one-two in the AL Central with almost nothing separating Gav Hagon and Ian Blease – the two 17-5 teams in the division. Will they meet in the final? That depends on whether Martin Osborne and/or Ian Allwood spoil the party.
Ian (the highest points scorer in the division) grabbed the final playoff spot with a victory over fifth-placed Chris Knoblock in the last matchup of the regular season.
AL NORTH
Mr Four Bases himself, Joel Bailey, registered a 17-5 regular season in a fantastic campaign. Did a final-week defeat reveal a vulnerability that Jon Lansdown can exploit in the two-week semi-final? In the other tie, John Shortland’s excellent season is rewarded with a matchup against Bat Flips & Nerds.
NL CENTRAL
Registering 20 wins in a 22-game season is an incredible achievement, so Robert Kermode enters the playoffs as the most dominant team in the entire GBFBS universe. He is joined in the postseason by Neil Littlewood, Liam Tumelty, and Ian Carter.
NL EAST
A four-game advantage over second place goes someway to demonstrate the gulf between Sam Devereux and the rest of the division. Joining Sam in the playoffs are Sim Ralph, Jacob Slade, and Bat Flips & Nerds.
Despite Sam’s dominance, there is a element of luck involved in the playoffs, which is one of the reasons why we introduced two-week scoring periods for the postseason.
AL WEST
It is no surprise that fantasy baseball superstar, Brent Bentley topped the AL West division. He faces a tough clash against Peter Farr, with prospect of playing the winner between James Oakley and Bat Flips & Nerds in the final.
Only one player across all of the GBFBS divisions scored more points than Brent. It was truly a masterful regular season display.
AL SOUTH
Despite a final week loss, Bryan Mullin ran away with the regular season, with an impressive 18-4 record. He is joined in the playoffs by Ian Flux, Nathanael Garfield, and Thomas McConnell.
It was a tough break for Marc Collins who misses out on the postseason despite racking up 5,399 points.
AL SOUTH
In the most remarkable climax to the regular season, three teams tied on 16-6 at the top the division. With nothing to choose between Ben Salvi, Malcolm Bamford, or Daniel Woodrow, the AL South divisional playoffs will be one to watch.
PREMIER LEAGUE (second-tier division)
What’s the fantasy baseball equivalent of the “yips”? because long-term division leader Nick Wright is suffering from it. Two defeats in the final two weeks, gifted the title to the second-half superstar Jamie Steed.
Jason Toms was another one suffering from finish-line anxiety and enters the playoffs on the back of a three-game losing streak.
However, in the tightest of possible finishes, Charlie Deeks pipped James Poppleton to the final playoff spot. Both finished with 12-10 records, but Charlie progresses thanks to scoring a mere 52 points more over the whole season.
THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
The creme de la creme. The division winners from last year battling it out in the most competitive division of GBFBS. Every team in the division had more than 5,000 points scored against them – that shows how hard fought every matchup was.
Undoubtedly, there is luck involved in fantasy baseball. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Spencer Strider were two of the four most expensive acquisitions in the Champions League auction. It is tough to mitigate against that or to recover when you have blown so much of your budget for little or no return.
However, for the second straight season, Richard Davison has dominated his division; surely that cannot be luck?
After a battering regular season, we now know that the inaugural Champions League winner will be one of Mark Blakemore, Luke Kendrick, Pete Urwin, or Richard Davison.
Special mention must go to last season’s winner of the top division, Adam Nicholson, who missed out on the playoffs this year by finishing in seventh position, despite only four teams across all of the GBFBS divisions scoring more overall points than Adam. Four! Now that’s bad luck.
Unsurprisingly, Adam had the most points scored against him. Others that suffered from their opponents bringing their “A” game to every matchup were John Loftus, Michael Annison, Chris Deeley, and Michael Garmston. Tough break, fellas.
