Baseball… with a British twist

MLB’s Hottest Hitters: Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh are Nowhere to be Seen

Who are currently the best hitters in the league? Some names might surprise you. I certainly was fooled by the best third baseman, so fooled that I had to re-run the report to ensure there wasn’t an error.

As per our previous “Power Rankings” we made a judgement to confine ourselves to production over the last 50 days. It seems like the ideal period to establish the best current hitters, while removing anomalies from a guy who enjoyed a hot week.

Catcher: Shea Langeliers

The Athletics might be bottom of the AL West, but 2025 has been better than expected. The team is actually watchable, and part of that is Shea Langeliers.

The 27-year-old has slashed .306/.344/.659 over the last 50 days, and regardless of the records Cal Raleigh is setting up the coast in Seattle, Langeliers is currently the premier catcher in the game.

First base: Nick Kurtz

Another A’s player!

Kurtz was only drafted last year, and the Rookie of the Year favourite is currently the hottest hitter in the league.

The 22-year-old has scored more runs (42) than he has played games (40) over the last 50 days, and this is while posting an MLB-leading .502 wOBA.

Second base: Brice Turang

This is the year of Brice Turang. Currently, he is so dominant as the game’s best second baseman, it is almost embarrassing.

And remember, this table is just for production with the bat. No credit is given for Turang’s gold glove ability.

I accept that Ketel Marte is enjoying a stellar 2025, but the Diamondbacks’ second baseman doesn’t even make the Top 10 over the last 50 days.

Shortstop: Bo Bichette

In the highly-competitive AL East, where the margin between winning the division title and finishing in a Wild Card scrap is minuscule, the Blue Jays needed Bo Bichette to bounceback from 2024’s disaster, and he obliged.

The 27-year-old is riding a 1.002 OPS over the last 50 days and is the MLB hit leader for 2025.

Third base: Maikel Garcia

In a recent article on Bat Flips & Nerds, it was pointed out that Maikel Garcia was the worst offensive player among qualified hitters in 2024.

He has certainly addressed that this season, and owns the hottest bat at the hot corner. Who saw that coming?

The game’s best third baseman, Jose Ramirez just misses the Top 10 (11th), and Manny Machado is way down in 24th.

Outfield: George Springer

Watching a 35-year-old enjoy a career-year, with no hint of PED abuse, is one of the highlights of the season.

George Springer‘s 154 OPS+ is the highest of his career.

Over the last 50 days, he has scored 39 runs in just 30 games. It is a simply staggering streak the former first-rounder, which is guiding Toronto into the postseason.

Designated Hitter: Shohei Ohtani

What more can we say about the Japanese phenom?

Yesterday, Shohei Ohtani hit two homers, taking his season tally to 48, in a win that stopped the Dodgers getting swept by the Baltimore Orioles. That would have been two successive sweeps by teams at the bottom of their divisions. Arigatō Shohei.

Honourable mentions: Kyle Schwarber has the most RBI (50) and is tied with Colson Montgomery for the most home runs (18) over the last 50 days, but they are let down by the rest of their offensive production.
