Next-Level Fantasy Baseball: The World Famous Head Scratcher League -

Now that the January Best Ball Fantasy Baseball draft is in the books, we – a diehard crew of nerds and oddballs with whom I associate – need something to satisfy our baseball fix as early spring training begins.

It needed to be something mentally demanding – far more than a routine snake draft. We wanted something ludicrously outside the boundaries of traditional fantasy baseball.

For the past few years, Bat Flips & Nerds have run an invitational fantasy baseball league defined by its unique rules and occasionally ludicrous settings – both of which change every year.

Let me introduce you to the World Famous Head Scratcher League.

Back in 2022, we unleashed the ELIMINATOR. The rule? The lowest-scoring team each week got the boot. Harsh and erratic… and a nightmare for the poor commissioner. Yet somehow, the spoils went to Ryan Owen of Rotobrits. And let’s be honest, few, if any, Brits can hold a candle to Ryan’s fantasy baseball wizardry. Bragging rights were well-deserved.

The following year, we cooked up an absolute cracker. Each manager had to draft a 30-man roster – sounds simple, but the twist was that only one player from each MLB team. Strategy became next level. Do you snatch Rockies and Pirates early, or gamble on what’s left? Spoiler: the 16th guy you pick off the White Sox does not hold much fantasy value.

Amid the chaos, Bubba (Jason Derr) – in the cover pic with Harry Ford – was crowned champion.

He wisely grabbed Aaron Judge with his first pick and smartly delayed the Rockies until the late rounds.

However, you need more than a good strategy; you need a little luck. Stumbling into Nolan Jones ahead of his career year (0.931 OPS) with a late, late pick counts as a little luck.

Of course, it was still a nightmare for the commissioner – especially during the draft when some participants autopicked players from teams they’d already used.

In 2024, we rolled out one of the wackiest concepts yet. Your first-round pick locked you into drafting exclusively from either the AL or the NL. Position depth wasn’t balanced between the leagues, so that opening selection carried a bit more weight than usual.

Tom Athene, drafting from the sixth spot, planted his flag in the AL, scooped up Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt Jr. before going on a full-blown pitching binge – five starters in the next five picks. Aggressive, unapologetic, and, as it turns out, championship-winning.

Meanwhile, British baseball legend Jonny Gould went all-in on the “just draft Braves” approach. On paper, a sound strategy, but in reality, less so. Jonny finished below the randomly drafted control team, which is the fantasy equivalent of finishing behind the office sweepstake entry that was picked entirely by someone’s cat. The NL-only autodraft squad strolled to 10th out of 15, leaving four other managers hanging their heads in shame.

Frustratingly, someone failed to show up for the draft, leaving their team to autodraft players from both leagues and quietly detonate the entire premise. Just another day in the life of a commissioner.

And so to 2025. undoubtedly it was the toughest challenge we’ve ever devised. Maybe that’s not true, but let’s say it is… mainly because I won. Darius Austin and Nick W-S pushed it right down to the wire, but when the dust settled, there it was in black and white: champion, me.

It was a variation of the “pick one player from each MLB team” with the massive twist that every round, we all had to pick from the same team. First round, White Sox, second round, Rockies. And so on.

Obviously, those picking at the turn would get the best player or the worst on that team, so the draft order was randomised each round. It demanded a level of strategy that almost made up for the huge workload it created for the commissioner.

So what is in store for 2026?

It’s another good one. As with all Head Scratcher leagues, the challenge is in the draft. Only very limited in-season management is required.

Simple rule 3: Straight-forward transactions
Simple rule 4: Straight-forward trades

And the twist

This will not be revealed until draft day, leaving all participants with next to no time to prep. Can you think on your feet and devise a strategy within the draft room?

Monday 23 February at 7:30pm for a couple of hours of live drafting, followed by 1 hour slow draft picks starting the following day.
