Baseball… with a British twist

The Road to the Playoffs: Checking in on the Great British Fantasy Baseball Superleague

Ahead of the MLB All-Star break we check in with the latest situation in the Great British Fantasy Baseball Superleague.

This is Bat Flips & Nerds’ fantasy baseball tournament – specifically for Brits and baseball fans in the UK – made up of interconnected divisions, giving competitors a chance to win their own division and compete for the overall highest-points prize.

Highest Points Scorers

We have veterans of previous tournaments dominating the overall leaderboard, with two-time winner of the highest points scorer award, Richard Davison, sitting (ominously for the rest of the field) in second place. Although it is Jon Lansdown – joint winner of the 2025 Champions League – who carries a narrow lead into July.

Division Leaders

The top four in each division will qualify for the playoffs. There is plenty of baseball still to be played, but currently these players are in the prime positions.

In the league of returning champions, John Loftus has finished as the week’s highest scorer on four occasions, yet finds himself out of the playoff spots which are occupied by Matthew Sutton, Freddie Shires, David Runciman, and two-time overall champion Luke Kendrick.

Division 2 features three of the 5000-point scoring teams. This is the Group of Death in this year’s GBFBS, which currently sees Jon Lansdown, Richard Davison, Ian Flux Olivares, and Martin Osborne occupying the top spots.

Brent Bentley has six weekly top scorer awards to his name, but trails Andy Crombie in Division 3. If the season finished today, the pair would be joined in the playoffs by Jamie Steed and Tom Hotchin.

Stewart Reynolds, Neil Littlewood, and Sean Weaver sit at the top of Division 4, just ahead of Mark Finbow, who has put together a solid campaign despite never clinching a weekly top scorer award. Yet, four of his division rivals outside of the playoff spots have. This division will go down to the wire.

Eight different participants in Division 5 have won weekly honours, including GBFBS debutant June Cruickshank. The rest of the division will need to step up to knock any of Joel Bailey, Callum Cockerill, Tim Brown or Paul Flux out of the playoff spots.

The largest difference between first and second place is in Division 6 where Gav Hagon, the self-styled Lytham Dodger, has accumulated the third-most points across the entire Great British Fantasy Baseball Superleague. Chris Knoblock, Sam Beresford, and Sarah Needham are currently in the other playoff spots, but amazingly, this division has seven teams tied with seven wins, so whoever steps up could find themselves in the playoffs.

Four double-digit winners fill the playoff spots in Division 7, where Andy Savage, Andrew Sharp, Ash Smith, and Chris Jones have beaten up on the division’s weaker teams. It’s definitely not over for Jack Fildew and Ian Allwood, who are only one game outside of the playoffs.

Division 8 also has four double-digit winners – Mark Dobinson, Ross Bramley, Simon Pearl, and Liam Tumelty – but the quartet are facing tremendous pressure from Stuart Cullen and Jack Gallagher.

Double-digit Win Club

Surely, only a capitulation could stop these teams from reaching the playoffs, but whether real-life or fantasy baseball, we see capitulations almost every season.

It is a notable achievement to finish the week as the highest points scorer in the division. Brent Bentley has managed it six times. Wow!

400-point weeks

Given the scoring settings in GBFBS, accumulating 400 points in a week is an acknowledgement that you have constructed an impressive roster who all performed when the pressure was on. Only 25 competitors have achieved this – there is no luck involved in scoring 400 points in a single week. Richard Davison achieving it on five occasions is simply stunning.
